Recap and Reaction on “The Duck Hunt”

What was fun/exciting/ successful?

I enjoyed that there was a storyline to follow, making it easier for the players to enjoy the performative aspects of the game. I think that the use of props and specific locations was successful in making people feel like they were actually on a mission.

I also really enjoyed that almost all the parts could pretty much be played by anyone in order to feel like an actual player and not just a staff member or an object in the game. An example would be my part. As the duck hider, I knew that my position was made to set the mission for the actual players. But I felt that my situation could be interpreted as another game within the game, where it became really stressful, trying to hide all around the building and became the hider in a hide and seek game. So I think that that part could really be played by anyone, and not just an official member of the creators of the game.

Another thing that I enjoyed was the amount of control one was given in the game by playing in real life. I liked that even the slightest decisions of the players could change the course of the game. Like Grant’s decision to turn against Sunny at the end of the game.

What could be improved to make the game more fun/playable/sharable?

I think more rules could have been used.

I noticed Grant and Sunny expressed some annoyance towards the lack of rules. Although I enjoyed the amount of control that was given to everyone, I can see how some more parameters could have been set. At the same time, I think maybe those parameters could have been more clear if the environment of the game was more convincing.. maybe with costumes or more props, or even addressing the reality of the building itself.

I also think it would have been cool to include more internet-based aspects. Just basing that on the fact that we were playing in real life.

Now a days, usually when someone has a problem or cant figure something out, they turn to the internet and research their answer. I think it would have been interesting if clues could have been provided online, maybe through networking websites, wikipedia, etc…

How to improve process, planning/collaboration?

Considering the amount of time we were given and our lack of corresponding schedules I think we did okay. But I do think it would have been nice if all of us could have actually met, and if more meeting were held. But I know that was kind of impossible. So i guess what was really needed was more time, unless we were working on a smaller project.

It would have been cool if everyone was really clear on their ideas. Maybe if everyone submitted their own versions of the game in order to combine them.Several test drives would have been helpful. And maybe more research.
